Baseball Falls in Road Contest at Virginia
03/09/2021 | Baseball
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Spider baseball couldn't solve the riddle of the Virginia Cavalier pitching staff Tuesday evening at Disharoon Park. The Spider offense managed just four hits and was shutout for the first time since April 9th, 2019 at Liberty in another midweek contest. Richmond falls to 5-3 on the season, while Virginia improves to 7-5.
Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) made his first start of the season Tuesday evening. The right-hander threw 2.0 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs to go with a pair of strikeouts. Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was the first reliever used. Neff worked a season-high 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, and one earned run with three strikeouts.
Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) made a relief appearance, facing three hitters before giving way to Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) who worked an inning. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) threw a scoreless eighth, giving up a hit and a walk, but kept Virginia off the board.
The Spider offense managed just four hits against a stout Virginia pitching staff. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.), Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.), Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) all managed a single in the contest.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two in the bottom of the first inning. After the lead-off man singled to center field, a bunt moved him over and a ground out to the right side moved him to third. The cleanup man brought in the first run with a single through the left side before scoring on a single later in the frame.
Virginia added solo runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, a lead-off triple scored on a single, and in the fifth, the lead-off hitter reached on an error and came around to score on a two-out single.
The Cavaliers added three more runs in the seventh inning, utilizing five walks and a hit batter to plate three runs and take the commanding lead.
Richmond returns to action on March 20th as it will host Old Dominion at Pitt Field at 2 p.m.
