Game one saw second-year freshman Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) get the start. The left-hander threw 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out seven. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) was first out of the bullpen, facing three hitters before giving way to Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.). Collins worked 3.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, and struck out four. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) earned the win, throwing a scoreless ninth.
The bottom of the order led the offense in game one. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) played the hero role with the two-RBI double in the ninth inning. He finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and scored twice. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a two-hit effort, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored a run. Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI and a sacrifice. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) finished with one hit each in game one.
Marcus worked 6.0 innings, striking out 10, scattering five hits and allowing one unearned run in the tail-end of the twinbill. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) was the first reliever used, throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) worked the ninth inning, giving up two unearned runs to go with two strikeouts.
Sprague-Lott continued his hot hitting into the nightcap, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI and scored twice. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) and Toso each went 2-for-4 with a couple runs scored, Ulrich added two RBI. Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) finished 1-for-5 with two RBI. Schulefand played right field in game two and went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Mathes and Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) each added a hit. Ricky Jones (Hopewell, Va.) got a pinch-hit appearance, singling in the eighth inning.
The Tigers played some small ball early in game one, scoring three runs in the first two innings. A lead-off single started the contest, and a hit by pitch put two on. A sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position, and a sacrifice fly brought in the first run of the day. The second inning saw a lead-off walk, a bunt single and a sacrifice put two in scoring position again and a single to left brought in two to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Richmond tied it up in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. Toso led off the inning by reaching on an error, and a single by Masel put two runners on. A walk loaded the bases for Mathes who chopped a fielder's choice to the right side to bring in the first run and put runners on the corners. After a Mathes stolen base, Sprague-Lott singled to shortstop to bring in one run, and a throwing error allowed Mathes to score to tie it at three.
Towson got the lead back with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. A ground-rule double that bounced over the wall in center put the first runner on, and a single to left brought him in. The Tigers scored three more in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, a walk and a single put two on. A double brought in two and a squeeze play scored the third run of the inning to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Spiders rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to cut the lead to 7-6. Toso led off with a single and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Hipsman drove a double to left to bring him in and Mathes traded spots with Hipsman with a double of his own. A walk to Sprague-Lott led to a wild pitch to put runners on the corners. Ciufo dropped a bunt down to bring in Mathes.
Towson responded the next half inning, using a two-run homer to extend the lead back out to 9-6.
Richmond refused to go away, plating two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hipsman started the rally with a walk and moved up after a Sprague-Lott single. Ciufo brought Hipsman in with a single prior to fielder's choice from Ulrich cut the lead to 9-8.
Toso started the rally in the bottom of the ninth, drawing a one-out walk. Masel bounced a single up the third base line to reach on an infield hit to put two on. After Jones and Leckie pinch ran for Toso and Masel, respectively, Mathes drove a 1-1 pitch to right center to bring in both and walk off the first game of the twinbill.
Towson got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first, but the Tiger momentum was erased in the bottom of the first frame as the Spiders scored twice. Ulrich led off with a single up the middle and moved up on a Toso single. Schulefand singled deep in the hole at shortstop to drive in the first run. Mathes followed with a ground ball to the right side to bring in another and take the lead at 2-1.
Richmond scored two more runs the next half inning. Sprague-Lott singled and Ulrich drew a walk. Rinaldi hammered a double to left center to drive in a pair. The third inning saw more of the same as the Spiders scored four runs. A single, a fielder's choice and a walk put two on as Sprague-Lott drove in another with a single to left. A wild pitch brought in Leckie, and a walk turned the lineup card over. Ulrich drove a double down the right field line to score two. And put Richmond up 8-1 after three innings.
The fourth inning saw the Spiders score two more on RBI from Cook and another single by Sprague-Lott. Richmond scratched a run home after a single to right from Mathes. Leckie drove a double to right center to score him from first and extend the lead to 11-1.
Towson scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the ninth.
Richmond is back in action next weekend as it opens Atlantic 10 Conference play with a four-game series at Saint Louis, beginning Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
