Sprague-Lott Homers as Baseball Finishes Series Sweep of Towson
04/11/2021 | Baseball
"I really like the way we played this weekend." Head coach Tracy Woodson said, "If we don't fight as hard as we did in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader, this weekend could have had a very different tone. Coming back and winning that one, really set us on a path to continue to play well this weekend. Offensively, up and down the lineup we had good quality at bats all weekend. It was good to see Jared (Sprague-Lott) hit his first home run this afternoon. He's a very talented kid, and having the weekend he did, I think they only got him out once time all weekend, I was very impressed with him. This is a good way to finish off the non-conference schedule and we'll look to keep this rolling at Saint Louis next weekend."
Colby Wyatt (Glendale, Ariz.) got the start, throwing four innings. After a tough first inning, he settled in and didn't allow a run over his final three innings of work. He ended the day giving up six hits, five runs, four earned and struck out three. Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) got the win, throwing two scoreless innings in relief, striking out four without allowing a hit. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) also threw two scoreless innings, striking out five giving up one hit. Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga.) worked the ninth, allowing a run and striking out one.
Sprague-Lott led the charge again against the Tigers. He finished Sunday's game 3-for-4 with five RBI, scored a run, and hit his first career home run. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a three-hit effort of his own, driving in two and scoring three times to go with a triple. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) each finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice, Forte added a double. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) went 2-for-6 with an RBI at the top of the lineup card as Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.), and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) all added one hit each.
Richmond got the offense working early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Ulrich led off with a single through the left side and a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Another hit by pitch brought in the first run of the afternoon. Leckie drove an outside pitch through the right side to score two and gave Richmond the early 3-0 lead.
Towson put up a five-spot of their own in the bottom of the first inning. A lead-off single and a double scored the first run of the day for the Tigers. A single and a walk loaded them up as Richmond got the ground ball it needed, but it was mishandled by the infield. The next hitter dropped a fly ball into center field that the Richmond center fielder made a diving attempt on, but it was ruled a trap and a base hit, scoring one. Richmond got out of the frame after a double scored two, and a fielder's choice double play saw a chopper back to the pitcher, who tagged the runner out at third. The batter attempted to take second, leading to the Spider defense to throw the ball to the second baseman, who relayed it home to tag the runner attempting to score on the play.
The Spiders tied it up in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs. A walk, a fielder's choice and two more walks loaded the bases. Ciufo hit a chopper to third that was misplayed, but allowed a run to score and keep the bases loaded. Ulrich followed with a fly ball to deep left field to drive in the tying run.
Richmond regained the lead after scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Back-to-back one-out singles started the rally before Rinaldi laid down a bunt and the throw to get him at first was wild, allowing a run to score and runners into scoring position. Sprague-Lott singled to bring in two and extend the lead to 8-5.
The Spiders put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs. After a lead-off single to second base from Ulrich, Schulefand reached on an error. Toso brought them home after tripling off the wall in center field. A Forte double brought in the third run before a Leckie single put two on. Sprague-Lott hit his first career homer to extend the lead to 14-5, Spiders.
The Spiders are back in action next Friday on the road as they open Atlantic 10 Conference play at Saint Louis against the Billikens at 3 p.m. It will be the first of a four-game series during the weekend.
