Mathes's Career-Outing Leads to an Atlantic 10 Opening Win Over Davidson
04/30/2021 | Baseball
Mathes worked a career-best 5.1 innings in relief, striking out a career-high seven hitters. Just two Davidson hitters reached base after Mathes took over on the bump as he didn't allow a hit or walk a batter.. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started, working an inning-plus, allowing two earned runs to go with a strikeout. Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) threw 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs to go with three strikeouts.
The Spider offense was consistent all day, putting at least one runner on in seven of eight innings. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) led the way with a 3-for-3 day, doubling and driving in a pair. Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) both finished with a pair of hits, with Ciufo scoring twice. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) each added a hit. Toso drove in a pair to go with a double, and Schulefand drove in a run of his own.
Davidson scored solo runs in each of the first three innings. The Wildcats took advantage of a bases loaded walk in the first, a lead-off walk came around to score on a single in the second, and a solo homer put Davidson up 3-0 after two and a half innings.
Richmond got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Ciufo led off with a base knock through the left side and moved up after Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) drew a walk. The two executed a double steal before a Schulefand sac fly brought in the first run. Blakely chopped a single to third base that bounced high enough for him to leg out the hit and Ulrich to score from third.
Davidson extended the lead back to two in the top of the fourth, loading the bases before another free pass brought in the run.
The Spiders got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Blakely led off with a one-out double and Toso traded places with him to cut it down to 4-3.
Richmond took its first lead of the game after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and a hit batter from Sprague-Lott and Ciufo turned the lineup over. Ulrich laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to get him at first was wild, allowing Sprague-Lott to score. An infield single loaded the bases and a bases loaded walk from Blakely put Richmond ahead. Toso brought in the third run of the inning as he lifted a fly ball to right to bring in Ulrich and put the Spiders up 6-4.
Mathes was unhittable down the stretch. Hit batters in the sixth and eighth innings were the only runners that Mathes allowed as he secured the victory.
Richmond and Davidson return to action tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Pitt Field.
