Willitts Shines as Baseball Drops Finale at George Washington
05/16/2021 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Va. – Freshman Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) threw a career-high 4.2 innings and carried a perfect game into the fifth inning in his first career start Sunday afternoon against the George Washington Colonials. Willitts and the pitching staff allowed just three runs, but couldn't get the run support they've been accustomed to this season, dropping the matchup 3-1. The Spiders fall to 17-15 on the season and 3-9 in Atlantic 10 play. George Washington improves to 25-14, and 14-6 in league action.
Willits worked a career-high 4.2 innings, retiring the first 14 hitters he faced before issuing a walk. He allowed two hits and an earned run to go with three strikeouts. Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) was the first reliever used and suffered the loss. He threw 1.2 innings giving up a run and striking out one. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) threw the final 1.2 innings, striking out a pair while allowing a hit and an earned run.
The Richmond offense had just four hits in the contest, two of which came from Richie Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.). The nine-hole hitter finished 2-for-2 with a double and scored a run. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) was 1-for-2 with a single and a walk. Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.) added the other hit, a double in a 1-for-3 performance.
The Spiders got on the board first, pushing a run home in the bottom of the third. Ciufo led off with a single to shortstop and moved up after Ulrich and Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) drew walks. Blakely drove the run in by wearing an 0-2 fastball off the back to give the Spiders the early 1-0 lead.
George Washington tied it up in the fifth. With two outs, a walk and back-to-back singles brought in a run to tie it at one each. The Colonials took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring one run. After a lead-off walk, a sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position for Derek Ripp who dropped a single down the left field line to bring in a run and take the lead 2-1.
The Spiders threatened in the top of the eighth as Ulrich led off with a single up the middle, but a double play and a ground out snuffed out the Spider rally.
George Washington added an insurance run in the eighth as a lead-off walk moved up with a sacrifice bunt and a single brought the run in to extend it to 3-1.
Richmond closes the regular season next week as it heads to George Mason for the final regular season series against the Patriots.
