Forte's Big Blast Not Enough as Baseball Falls Short at George Mason
05/20/2021 | Baseball
Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) got the ball to start Thursday's game. The second-year freshman threw 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out six hitters. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) took over in the sixth as he threw 2.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits. Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) came in with runners on in the eighth, but suffered the loss. He threw 0.2 innings, giving up an unearned run.
The Spider offense went for 10 hits in the contest, three each by Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.). Toso added a double and Masel scored a run. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) finished 1-for-5 with an RBI and scored a run, Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) finished 1-for-3 and scored once and Richie Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) finished 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Forte's big blast drove in three runs and scored once in the loss. Jared Sprague-Lott added an RBI to his team-leading total of 30.
George Mason got on the board first in the first inning. With two outs, a single, a stolen base and a balk moved a runner to third. The cleanup hitter doubled to right center to bring in the first run.
Richmond got on the board in the top of the third. Ciufo led off with a double down the third baseline and came around to score when Ulrich hit a high chopper to the shortstop where the throw to get him at first was wild, allowing Ciufo to score.
Mason used the long ball to score its next three runs. Getting a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning to go up 4-1.
After a couple scoreless innings, Richmond got back on the board in the top of the seventh. Ulrich reached with a bunt single and went first to third when Toso followed with a single to right. Ulrich came in on a Sprague-Lott sacrifice fly to left field to cut the lead in half.
The Spiders took the lead in the top of the eighth inning with a three-run home run from Forte. Masel and Leckie set the table with a single and a walk, respectively, as George Mason went to the bullpen. Forte took a 1-2 pitch from the Mason left-hander and bounced it off the scoreboard in right center to put the Spiders up 5-4.
The Patriots came right back with a couple runs in the bottom of the eighth. A lead-off single and an error put runners on the corners with one out. A single brought in the first run before a bases loaded walk scored the second run of the inning as Mason took a 6-5 lead.
These two teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Spuhler Field.
