RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond senior defender Brittney Wright was selected as an IWLCA Second Team All-South Region honoree, the association announced Wednesday.
The native of Moorestown, N.J. is the first Spider to be bestowed the honor since the 2019 season when Julie Ball collected Second Team honors for the second-straight season.
Wright earns the regional honor after being named the 2021 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Atlantic 10.
Wright, Richmond's defensive leader and top match-up defender, started in all 12 contests this season, collecting 18 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Her presence and lacrosse IQ led Richmond to a #11 national ranking in scoring defense. She held GW's and VCU's top scorers to only two goals and two assists over three match-ups. Wright's defense limited Davidson's nationally ranked scoring offense (#15) to its second lowest output of the year and almost four goals lower than its season average in goals.
Wright also collected A-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors March 30 after helping the Spiders defense shutdown GW (3/26) and VCU (3/28) to collect two conference victories. She also had two ground balls and a caused turnover against GW and two caused turnovers against VCU.
The IWLCA has honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2021. These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to a national IWLCA All-American team. The IWLCA will announce the 2021 All-American teams and Players of the Year in June.
