Baseball Wins Season Finale by Mercy Rule at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Spider baseball ended the 2021 season with several bangs as the Spiders defeated the George Mason Patriots 11-1 in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field. With the game tied at one, Richmond broke it open with six-straight hits to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The Spiders added four more runs in the top of the seventh and held George Mason off the board to earn the mercy-rule victory. Richmond concludes its season with a 19-17 record and a 5-11 mark in Atlantic 10 play. George Mason finishes the season 14-29 and 7-17 in league play.
Freshman Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) got the ball to start the season finale. The freshman threw a season-high 5.0 innings, struck out a career-high six to earn his first collegiate victory. Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) was the first reliever out of the bullpen, throwing a scoreless sixth inning. Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished it out with a scoreless seventh, ending the season by striking out the George Mason hitter.
The Spider offense connected on 13 hits in the contest as 12 hitters got at bats. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.), Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) and Justin Cook (Virginia Beach, Va.) each connected on two hits, Leckie drove in two runs. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) also drove in a pair, going 1-for-2 with a run scored, off the bench, Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.), Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.), Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) all connected for a hit in the contest. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in a run and walked twice.
Richmond struck first in the top of the second inning, plating a run. A lead-off double from Mathes came in when Leckie took the first pitch he saw back up the middle to score him and take the early 1-0 lead.
George Mason struck for a run in the fourth. A hit batter moved up on a weak ground out to third, and a single from the Mason third baseman got to the outfield grass, allowing a run to score to tie it at one.
The Spiders broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs. After a lead-off ground out, Richmond put two on with a hit batter and a walk. Six-consecutive hits drove in six runs as the Spiders took a commanding 7-1 lead.
Richmond added to its lead in the seventh. Cook and Rinaldi led off with singles and a Ciufo walk loaded them up. Schulefand singled to left to score two and Ciufo hustled around to third forcing a throw that got away allowing him to score. After a wild pitch moved Schulefand to third, Toso lifted a fly ball to the outfield to bring him in and put the Spiders up 11-1.
