Three Spiders Earn Atlantic 10 Postseason Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Spider baseball placed three on the Atlantic 10's postseason all conference teams as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) earned All-Rookie Team honors with redshirt junior Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) earning All-Academic honors.
Mathes, a two-way player for the Spiders, logged 56 at bats in 25 games, while appearing in nine games with three starts on the mound. On the mound, he worked his way into the series-opener role. He earned a 4.81 ERA in 33.2 innings. He struck out 38 hitters and held opponents to a .205 average against. All four of his outings in league play spanned 5.0 or more innings. He struck out a career-high nine against Dayton, and threw a career-best 7.0 innings at George Washington. At the plate, Mathes hit for a .250 average and had four multi-hit games and drove in a career-best four, including a walk-off two-RBI double against Towson. He scored 15 runs and drove in 13 while earning a .446 slugging percentage with eight doubles and a home run.
Sprague-Lott hit for a league-best .413 batting average and was fifth in the league with a .613 slugging percentage. In his first start, he went 1-for-4, scored a run and drove in two with his first career triple. He took over as the everyday shortstop on March 21st, going 3-for-3 with three RBI against George Mason. Sprague-Lott was third on the team with 33 hits, and led the Spiders with 31 RBI. He had eight extra-base hits and was third on the team with three home runs.
Blakely has been the Spiders every day catcher since arriving on campus and was named a team captain in 2021. This season, he led all catchers in the Atlantic 10 with a .342 average in 31 games. He drove in 13 runs and scored 20 times while slugging .441. Defensively, Blakely earned a perfect fielding percentage on 262 chances. He also led the league with a .588 stolen base allowed percentage, throwing out 14 of 34 attempted base stealers. This spring, Blakely received his master's degree in nonprofit studies.
