Schulefand and Sprague-Lott Homer in Loss to Dayton

The Spider offense went 11 hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-4 effort from right fielder Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.). Schulefand added a pair of infield hits to go with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a two-hit effort, hitting his third home run of the season in the sixth. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) also finished 2-for-4 and hit the first triple of his Spider career. Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.), Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.), Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) each added a hit in the contest.
Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) made the most of his first career start, setting career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. Mathes worked 6.1 innings, striking out nine hitters while suffering the loss. Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) was the first reliever used. Collins worked 0.2 innings, allowing a hit and striking a hitter out. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) threw a third of an inning, facing two hitters. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) was the final pitcher used. The right-hander threw 1.2 innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and struck out two.
After three scoreless innings, Dayton got on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Riley Tirotta.
Richmond responded in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot of its own from Schulefand.
The Flyers answered in the top of the sixth with a lead-off triple and a single to score a run and extend the lead back to one. A walk and a wild pitch put two in scoring position with no outs. After a pair of strikeouts, Dayton got the big hit it needed, a double to left to go up 4-1. The Flyers continued their scoring into the seventh, plating two more. The lead-off hitter struck out, but a passed ball allowed him to reach first. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, a hit by pitch and a single brought in two more to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Spiders responded in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two to cut into the lead. Schulefand singled with a hard hit ball to third base and came around to score on Sprague-Lott's third homer of the season.
After a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, Richmond got a couple runners on, but didn't couldn't bring one in in the ninth, falling 8-3.
Richmond and Dayton are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Pitt Field.
