RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball dropped a pair of games to the Dayton Flyers on Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. The Spiders dropped game one 3-2, allowing three runs in the top of the seventh inning, and fell in the nightcap, 5-2. With the losses, Richmond is now 16-11 on the year and 2-5 in Atlantic 10 play. Dayton improves to 17-23 and 7-4 in conference action.
Game one saw Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) see a dominant start fade in the top of the seventh. The left-hander threw a total of 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out eight. He allowed just five base runners over the first six innings. Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) came on in relief to get the final out of the seventh inning.
The nightcap saw Colby Wyatt (Glendale, Ariz.) toss all seven innings. The grad-transfer allowed eight hits, five earned runs and struck out four, suffering his second loss of the season.
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) led the offense, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and scoring a run over the two games. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a hit in each game with a double in game two. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Dan Leckie (Suffield, Conn.) each added a pair of hits, Leckie's came in the first game, Toso had one in each. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.), Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) and Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.) had a base hit each.
Richmond got on the board first in the bottom of the third of game one. Schulefand led off with a triple and scored on a ground ball to the right side to go up 1-0. Toso connected on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning to put The Spiders up 2-0.
It took until the seventh inning for Dayton to get on the board, with one out, Chris Cabrerra hit a solo home run to right center to cut the lead in half. After a hit by pitch put a runner on, Jay Curtis hit a two-run homer to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.
The Spiders threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Anthony Forte (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) pinch hit and drew a walk, and moved to third on a fielder's choice and an error. Richmond got a ground ball, but the Dayton shortstop made the backhand play and fired a strike to get the Spider hitter and close out the first game.
The Flyers wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap, hitting solo home runs in the top of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Richmond responded in the bottom of the second. Toso led off with a single to right and came around to score when Hipsman doubled off the base of the wall in right field.
The Flyers added a run in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly before the Spiders responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. A lead-off walk by Chris Rinaldi (Westfield, N.J.) started the rally and he came around on an Ulrich single.
Dayton manufactured two runs in the top of the fifth. A bunt single started the rally, followed by a single and a double. A ground ball to the right side brought in the second run of the frame and extended the lead to 5-2.
Richmond couldn't gain ground over the final two innings, putting a runner on in the sixth and didn't threat in the seventh.
The Spiders and Flyers are wrap up the series tomorrow at 12 p.m. for a single, nine inning game. It will be the final home game of the 2021 season.
