Baseball Drops Finale with Dayton

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond baseball rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn't keep the Dayton Flyers off the board late as the Spiders fell 20-10 in the final game of the four-game Atlantic 10 Conference series. The Spiders fall to 16-12 on the year and 2-6 in league play with the loss. Dayton improves to 18-23 and 8-4 in league action.
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn.) had a career day at the plate to lead the Spider offense. Ulrich finished 5-for-6, setting a new career-high in hits for a game in his collegiate career, and tied his career best with four runs scored. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a 2-for-5 game with a double and scored once. Jordan Schulefand (Parkland, Fla.) had two singles in a 2-for-5 effort. Drew Blakely (Galesburg, Mich.), Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) and Austin Masel (Stoneham, Mass.) each had a hit and at least one RBI.
Jacob Marcus (Malvern, Pa.) started the game, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, six earned runs and struck out one. Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) was first out of the bullpen, throwing a career-high 2.1 of his own and struck out four. Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) worked 0.2 innings without allowing a hit, struck out one but gave up three earned runs. Collin Lowe (Ridgefield, Conn.) threw 1.2 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out four.
Matthew Plisko (Alpharetta, Ga.) worked a third of an inning before giving way to Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) Argomaniz threw 0.2 innings, giving up three runs and striking out one hitter. Jarrad DeLarso (Marlton, N.J.) didn't allow a run, giving up two hits.
The Spiders struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Ulrich doubled down the left field line and advanced on a couple ground balls to put Richmond up 1-0.
Dayton responded in the top of the second with a solo run of their own. A walk came around to score on a two-out single from Alex Brickman to tie it at one.
Richmond got back in front in the bottom of the frame. Mathes walked and moved up on a couple ground outs. Ulrich got the barrel on it and drove him in to put the Spiders back in front, 2-1
The Flyers hit a pair of home runs in the top of the third to take a 6-2 lead, and another three-run homer in the top of the fourth extended the lead to 9-2.
The Spiders got a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice. With two outs, Ulrich doubled and Sprague-Lott drew a walk. Blakely drove a double down the right field line to score two and cut the lead to 9-4.
Dayton went up 13-4 after a solo homer in the top of the fifth, and scored three more in the top of the sixth. Riley Tirotta stole home and Mariano Ricciardi drove in two with a double.
Richmond got a run back as Ulrich singled and moved to second on a Sprague-Lott single. Blakely hit into a fielder's choice and the attempted double play to get him at first got away, allowing Ulrich to score.
Dayton went up 15-5 in the seventh after a Mitchell Garrity two-run homer.
The Spiders sparked a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five times. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) led off the inning with a walk and moved up on a Schulefand single. Mathes and Masel followed with back-to-back doubles to score three. Ulrich singled which led to a Sprague-Lott single, allowing Masel to score. The final run came home on a passed ball to cut the lead down to 15-10.
The Flyers put the game away in the final two innings. Scoring twice in the eighth and three more times in the ninth to run the finals core to 20-10.
Richmond returns to action on Friday as they head to George Washington for a matchup with the George Washington Colonials.
