PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Richmond soccer team dropped a road contest to Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne Thursday night, 3-1, falling to 0-6 on the road this season. The Dukes struck three times in the first half, and Emma Coleman was able to avoid the shutout for Richmond with a goal in the 80th minute. The Spiders drop to 4-6-1 (2-2-0 A-10) with the loss while Duquesne improves to 4-5-1 (2-2-0 A-10)
"Tonight we made three mistakes in the first half and Duquesne punished us for them," said head coach Marty Beall. "I'm proud of how the girls responded in the second half, dominating every aspect of the game, but we didn't finish enough of the great chances we created. We need learn from this game and get mentally and physically ready for LaSalle on Sunday."
Duquesne struck first in the 12th minute when Cami Taylor punched one in off a perfect cross from the left side of the box. The Dukes later doubled their lead as Hannah Nguyen snuck past the Spider backline and won a one-on-one battle with Richmond keeper Claire Hinkle in the 35th minute. Less than three minutes later, Duquesne pushed its lead to 3-0 with a header by Karley Steinher off a corner kick in the 37th minute.
The Spiders created solid chances in the second half, but could not finish any of them until in the 80th minute when Emma Coleman collected a throw in at midfield and drove all the way in, beating three Duquesne defenders to find the back of the net and make it 3-1.
Richmond tallied eight shots in the second half compared to just two in the first half, and was led by Emma Kennedy and June Stevens with two shots on goal apiece.
Hinkle was one save shy of her season-high with six, four of them coming in the first half alone.
Richmond continues on the road on Sunday with another A-10 matchup at La Salle beginning at 1 p.m.
