Lainey Nichols Scores Twice In Spider Hockey Victory at Bucknell
10/16/2022 | Field Hockey
LEWISBURG, PA – The University of Richmond field hockey team snapped their six-game losing streak after defeating Bucknell 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Graham Field.
Richmond, now 6-9 on the year and 2-3 in Atlantic 10 Conference action, returns to Crenshaw Field to host No. 18 UMass on Friday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
"The team worked hard for the win today," head coach Jamie Montgomery said. "They ran fast, tackled well, supported each other and it showed in their enthusiasm and excitement every minute of the game!"
Bucknell (4-10) scored first, taking the lead in the first minute of action.
Freshman Lainey Nichols (Powhatan, Va.) tied the game up at 1-all in the sixth minute, directing in a sharp pass from Ella Hayes (Virginia Beach, Va.) at the top left of the circle. Nichols picked up her fourth goal on the season, while Hayes collected her first assist.
The Bison took a 2-1 lead just six minutes later in the first quarter, a lead they would take into the half time break. Bucknell held a 7-6 shot advantage, while Richmond held the upper hand in corners, 4-3.
Senior Lindsey Frank (Sarasota Springs, N.Y.) tied the game up two minutes into the third quarter, putting back a rebound off a corner play shot. Frank's seventh goal of the season deflected off a Bucknell defender and got past the goalie.
Four minutes later, Lainey Nichols tallied her second goal of the day and fifth on the season to give the Spiders the lead. Nichols faked her Bison defender, spun and her shot hit the Bison goalie's pads then trickled in between her feet for the game-winner.
Both squads finished with eight corners each, while Bucknell held the upper-hand in shots, 16-13, and shots on goal, 7-6.
Spiders goalie Kristen Rake (Wynnewood, Pa.) picked up her first collegiate victory, making four saves on the day. Senior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) picked up her A-10 leading fifth defensive save in the first half.
