Baseball Rallies for 3-2 Victory over Bucknell
02/19/2022 | Baseball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Once the University of Richmond baseball team knocked Bucknell's starter out of the game in the eighth, the Spiders offense attacked and came away with a 3-2 victory Saturday at Wando River Field at Shipyard Park.
"Really excited how well we pitched today," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "Brock [Weirather] and Josh [Willitts] were tremendous."
"Offensively, we had to battle all day. Alden [Mathes] and Will [Gersky] came up with big hits for us in the eighth. I really liked the effort overall."
Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) led off the bottom of the eighth, picking up his first base hit of his Richmond career. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) then put down a sacrifice bunt to push Beal to second.
With one out, Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) laced a double to right center field, scoring Beal from second to tie the game. Bucknell intentionally walked Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) to get to Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.). Gersky hit a first-pitch single to left field to score Mathes for the lead.
Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) drew a two-out walk in the eighth the load the bases and knock out Bucknell's reliever. Jackson Petersen battled against Bucknell's second relief pitcher of the inning, but struck out.
Spider reliever Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) induced back-to-back Bucknell fly ball outs, worked around a walk, and captured his first victory on the mound with a fly ball to Mathes in centerfield in the ninth. Willitts threw three scoreless innings with two strike outs and one hit batter, in relief of starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.). Weirather, in his first start as a Spider, gave up two runs, one earned, on nine hits in six innings of work. He also struck out one and walked one.
The Spider offense battled against Bucknell's starter Will Greer, who went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out seven.
Freshman Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) collected his first collegiate hit in the second.
In the fourth inning, Toso legged out a triple to right field and scored on an error by Bucknell's third baseman to put the Spiders on the scoreboard.
Richmond closes out the Swig & Swine College Classic Sunday against Air Force on Detyens Field at Shipyard Park. First Pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
