Baseball Captures 12-inning, 8-7, Win Over Holy Cross

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team collected their fourth walk-off victory of the season on Thursday, defeating Holy Cross 9-8 in 12 innings at Pitt Field.
Richmond moves to 9-3 on the year while Holy Cross falls to 2-12 on the season.
Holy Cross jumped on the Spiders starter Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.), taking a 4-0 lead in the first on two hits and three walks. Willitts shook off the rough first inning to scatter two more runs on three hits and four strikeouts over four more innings of work, including a scoreless fourth and fifth inning.
Richmond got a run back in the bottom of the first as Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) scored on Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) sacrifice fly to center field.
Holy Cross extended the lead to 6-1 by the third, adding single runs in the second and third frames.
With two out in the third, Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) doubled and came around to score on a base hit by Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.), to cut into Holy Cross' lead, 6-2. With the hit, Toso extended his hitting streak to 12-games and on a 5-for-7 day at the plate now leads the nation with 29 hits on the season.
Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) walked to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth. Hipsman got a base hit to score Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) for the first run of the inning. Beal had a hard hit to short, who went for the force at third, allowing Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) to score.
Brendan Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) took over on the hill for the Spiders in the sixth, throwing three-straight scoreless frames before allowing one run in the ninth. He also threw a scoreless 10th and 11th innings for the Spiders. He scattered five hits and struck out one over six innings of work.
Richmond left two runners on in the fifth and sixth innings, but got back on the score board in the seventh to tie the game at 6-all. The Spiders tagged Holy Cross for two runs one run, two walks and an error.
Mathes led off the eighth with his third triple of the season. Two pitches later, Mathes scored on Toso's sharp hit through the middle of the infield to give the Spiders a 7-6 lead.
Holy Cross tied it in the ninth on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Richmond left the bases loaded in the 10th and couldn't get the offense going in the 11th.
Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) took over in the 12th. After allowing a single to the first batter he faced, Corso, collecting his first collegiate victory, got the next two Crusaders to strikeout before getting a fly ball out to center fielder Mathes.
Toso, getting his fifth hit of the day, legged out a double to lead off the 12th. Elbeery drew a walk and both were moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.). Papantonis was intentionally walked to load the bases. Gersky hit a sharp hit to second, the Holy Cross defender tried to get the out at second base, but the throw went wide and gave Toso enough time to score the winning run.
Richmond and Holy Cross return to Pitt Field Friday for game two of the four-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on EPSN-Plus.
