Toso Extends Hit Streak with 3-Run Walk-Off Home Run Over Holy Cross, 6-5
03/11/2022 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – With two on and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the University of Richmond's Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent the first pitch he saw over the batter's eye in straight-away center field at Pitt Field to collect the 6-5 walk-off victory Friday over Holy Cross.
Richmond, tallying the program's fifth walk-off victory of the season, moves to 10-3 on the year while Holy Cross falls to 2-13.
With the game-winning hit, Toso extended his hit-streak to 13-games and heads into the weekend with a nation-leading 30 hits on the season.
"I've not seen anything like it, what this team is doing," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "They just don't give up and stay hungry at the plate."
Richmond starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) worked a season-high 6.1 innings, only allowing one run on six hits and three walks while collecting a season-high eight strikeouts.
The Spiders got on the scoreboard first in the third inning. Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) opened the frame trotting to first after getting hit in the first pitch he saw. Shane Gipson (Chicago, Ill.) worked a 12-pitch at-bat for a walk before Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) got plunked to load the bases. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) hit a sharp single to right to force in Gersky. Toso followed with an RBI ground out to push the Spiders lead to 2-0.
Holy Cross cut Richmond's lead in half in the sixth, tallying one run on two hits.
Richmond got a run back in the seventh, as Mathes singled to score Gipson from second.
Freshman Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) took over for Neff with one out in the seventh. Rodriguez got out of the seventh unscathed, tallying a strikeout. In the eighth, Rodriguez allowed two runs on two hits and a walk with an UR throwing error. With one on and one out, freshman Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) got the call to finish the ninth. Despite allowing two runs for Holy Cross to take a 5-3 lead, Ready collected his first collegiate win.
In the bottom of the ninth, Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) got a pinch-hit single to right to get the Spiders going. Mathes drew a five pitch walk to have two on for Toso's three-run blast.
The four-game series has been altered due to inclement weather headed to the area this weekend. Saturday's game has been canceled and will not be made up. Sunday's game will now start at 1 p.m. at Pitt Field and on ESPN-Plus.
