Spiders Drop Series Against Villanova

Richmond (12-8) is back in action Tuesday, March 29, heading to Charlottesville to take on No. 10 Virginia. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
After two scoreless innings for both squads, Villanova (6-13-1) took the lead in the third, drawing a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.
Richmond answered in the bottom of the third, as Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) extended his hit streak to 20-straight games with a double down the left field line. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Toso scored on Jared Sprague-Lott's (Philadelphia, Pa.) base hit to left.
Free passes plagued the Richmond pitching staff, as 14 walks and five hit batters were allowed to reach throughout the game. The Wildcats jumped on Richmond starter Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) in the fourth, scoring five runs. Mathes (2-1) was tagged with six runs on three hits, two hit batters and six walks in three plus innings of work.
Villanova added three more runs in the sixth and sixth in the ninth, as the Spiders had 10 total pitchers take the mound in the game.
Richmond catcher Shane Gipson (Chicago, Ill.) picked up an RBI single to left in the sixth inning, scoring Sprague-Lott reached on a single to left center for his second hit of the day. Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) extended his multi-hit hit streak to six-straight games in the sixth with a single to right.
Richmond reliever Jack Buckley (Bronx, N.Y.) tossed a scoreless top of the seventh, only allowing one Wildcat hit. In the bottom of the frame, D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) led off with a base hit and was followed by Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) drawing a walk. Mathes, with his second hit on the day, scored Pacheco with an RBI hit to right. Toso followed with an RBI hit to right for his third hit of the day to score Beal, but two Spiders were stranded on the corners to end the rally.
