Spiders Fall at No. 4 Virginia, 8-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped an 8-2 midweek decision at No. 4 University of Virginia Tuesday at Disharoon Park.
The Spiders open Atlantic 10 Conference play this weekend, heading to North Carolina to take on Davidson. First game of the series is set for a 6 p.m. start Friday on ESPN-Plus.
Richmond (12-9) got back-to-back hits from Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) and Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) in the first but they were stranded.
UVA (23-2) scored single runs in each of the first three innings.
Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) reached on a UVA error in the third, while Jake Elbeery (West Andover, Mass.) drew a walk in the fourth. Toso reached twice in the game, both on UVA errors, but didn't register a hit, ending his hitting streak at 20-games.
In the fifth, Beal made it to third on another UVA error and scored on Mathes' RBI ground out to break up the shutout in the fifth, 3-1.
UVA tagged reliever Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) with three runs, one earned, on two hits and two errors in the fifth. Allen also got a strikeout, while walking one and hitting one.
In the second pitch of his at-bat in the sixth, Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) blasted a solo home run to left field.
UVA added single runs in the seventh and eighth to push their lead to 8-2.
Richmond starter Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. WIllitts allowed two runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out two in two innings of work. Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) gave up one run on two hits and struck out one in an inning of work.
Jake Michal (Baltimore, Md.) allowed one hit but held the Cavaliers scoreless in the fourth. Dane Armson (Montoursville, Pa.) took over for Allen in the sixth, allowing a hit, a walk and struck out one to hold UVA scoreless. Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.) got two outs in the seventh and Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) got the final out. Larson got two outs in the eighth, before Harrison Clifton (Henrico, Va.) and Matthew Haines (Mechanicsville, Va.) combined to get the final out.
