Baseball Drops A-10 Opener to Davidson, 8-5

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond offense came alive in the top of the ninth inning Friday night at Wilson Field scoring five runs to break up the shutout against Davidson. The Wildcats would end the Spiders rally and collect the Atlantic 10 Conference opener, 8-5.
Game two of the series between the Spiders (12-10, 0-1 A-10) and Wildcats (20-5, 1-0 A-10) is set for Saturday with first pitch at 2 p.m. on ESPN-Plus from Wilson Field.
Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the ninth inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on Drew Beno's (Loxahatchee, Fla.) base hit to left. Sprague-Lott then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning to break up the shutout.
Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) collected his second double of the game to score Beno from second. Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) was hit by the pitch and Chase Conklin (Mullica Hill, N.J.) drew a walk to load the bases for Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.). With one out, Beal was hit to force in Papantonis. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) collected an RBI on a groundout before Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled to right to score Conklin.
Davidson jumped on Richmond starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.), tagging him with five runs on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work. Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) took over for Neff in the second, allowing three runs to score on three hits before getting the final out via strikeout. Rodriguez went five more innings, tossing four scoreless frames, while collecting six more strikeouts. Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) threw one inning of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.
