"I was really pleased with how we bounced back today," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "The guys forgot about yesterday's game and focused on the task at hand."
Richmond got another strong start from Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.). Weirather scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings of work with four strikeouts and one hit batter to collect his second victory of the season.
Making their season debuts, Brian Reinke (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) both pitched an inning of relief for Richmond. Reinke allowed one run on one hit, one walk and collected a strike out. Larson gave up three runs on four hits and struck out two.
In the second, Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored the first run of the game when the Lafayette catcher over threw his pitcher, after reaching with a base hit to left. Shane Gipson (Chicago, Ill.) in his first at-bat for Richmond, hit a three-run home run to center field, scoring Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) and Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.). Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) tallied the Spiders fifth run of the frame on a wild pitch.
In the third, Papantonis doubled to lead off the inning. Hipsman followed with a single and stole second before Gipson walked to load the bases. Beal scored Papantonis on a sacrifice fly to center for the first run of the inning. Hipsman then scored on a wild pitch and on the next pitch, Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) hit a two-run home run to right field to close the four-run inning for the Spiders.
Richmond added five more runs in the fourth inning. Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) doubled to start the inning then scored on Sprague-Lott's double. Papantonis, who went four-for-five on the day, kept the line going with a base hit. Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) got in on the hit parade with a three-run home run down the left field line. Hipsman scored on Dominic Toso's (Philadelphia, Pa.) base hit. Toso went six-for-seven with a double for a career-high day at the plate.
Hipsman, on a career-high five hit day, hit a two-run home run to right in the bottom of the fifth, putting the Spiders up 16-0.
In the sixth, Papantonis hit a bases loaded single to push in Beal who drew two walks in the frame. Gersky blasted the first pitch he saw for a grand slam, pushing the lead out to 21-0.
Pinch-hitting in the seventh, Drew Beno (Loxahatchee, Fla.) laced a double down the right field line to score Toso and Elbeery.
After Lafayette tallied a run in the top of the eighth, Richmond tacked on two more runs for a 25-1 lead. With two-outs, Toso doubled and advanced to third on Elbeery's base hit. Toso scored on a Lafayette error while Elbeery scored on Beno's second double of the day.
Lafayette hit a three-run home run in the ninth, but Larson was able to get out of the frame and end the game with a strike out.
