Baseball Walks-Off Princeton, 9-8
03/07/2022 | Baseball
Richmond, with the squad's third walk-off victory of the season, moves to 8-3 on the season as Princeton falls to 0-7.
"I love the resilience of this team," head coach Tracy Woodson said. "But we should never be in that position. Our bullpen has to finish that off."
Spider starter Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) shook off a shaky first inning, allowing two runners on with a base hit and a walk, to go eight solid innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, scattered five hits, one walk and a hit batter, while striking out a career-high 10 batters.
He also got the Spider offense going in the first inning with a solo home run to right field. Then in the third he singled through the infield to score his catcher Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) from second.
Princeton got single runs in the fifth in six to tie the game at 2-all.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to left. Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed with his first home run of the season to right field to put the Spiders up 4-2.
Richmond tacked on another run in the seventh to go up 5-2, forcing in a run after Andrew Papantonis (Lebanon Township, N.J.) was hit by the pitch.
Beal put the Spiders up 6-2 in the eighth when he scored on a Tiger wild pitch.
After throwing eight complete innings, Mathes headed out to center field for the ninth. Princeton tagged Spider relievers Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) and Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) for six runs on three hits, including a grand slam, and one error to take an 8-6 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Papantonis got the Spiders going with a base hit to third. After Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice, Neff hit a two-run blast to center field to tie the game at 8-all. Will Gersky (Woodbury, Conn.) kept the inning alive with a pinch-hit single. Beal reached on a fielder's choice and Mathes followed with his third hit of the day to have two on for Toso.
Richmond has a quick turnaround, hosting a four-game series against Holy Cross starting Thursday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Pitt Field on ESPN-Plus.
