04/10/2022 | Women's Lacrosse
Amherst, Mass.— The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team lost its first conference game of the season Sunday, falling at UMass, 15-9. Entering the game, both teams had identical records of 11-2, 5-0 and eyes set on the lone spot atop the Atlantic 10 standings.
The Spiders (11-3, 5-1) and Minutewomen (12-2, 6-0) were tied after the first quarter, but an opportunistic UMass team would pull away over the final 45 minutes, forcing Richmond to play catchup.
Colleen Quinn and Lindsey Frank led the the team with two goals each, while Grace Muldoon, Kendall Duffy, Sophia DiCenso, Arden Tierney and Marina Miller each chipped in one.
UMass held the 17-10 upper hand in draw controls to win the possession game and fire off 32 shots towards Delaney Galvin, six of which she saved. UMass's Gina Carroll made 11 saves.
The Spiders (20) were nearly even with the Minutewomen (21) for shots on goal, but streaky scoring was prove to be the difference maker as the Spiders fell for just the third time this season.
Sophia DiCenso scooped three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers, while Grace Muldoon added another two. Colleen Quinn was a perfect 2-2 on free position attempts, scoring both her goals from the eight-meter arc.
Up next, the Spiders return home to Robins Stadium next Thursday and Sunday, April 14 and 16 when it faces St. Bonaventure and Davidson. Game times are set for 4 p.m. Thursday against the Bonnies and 1 p.m. Saturday against the Wildcats.
