Spiders Drop A-10 Series Against VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team fell 13-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference rubber match Sunday to VCU at Pitt Field. The Spiders have a quick turnaround and will head to Harrisonburg to take on James Madison for a 4 p.m. contest Tuesday.
Richmond falls to 16-16 on the season and 2-7 in league action, as VCU moves to 19-15 on the year and 5-4 conference action.
After VCU tallied a run in the top of the first, Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) got Richmond going with a single through the right side. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent the next pitch to the right field wall, picking up Mathes with an RBI triple to tie the game. Toso scored on Andrew Papantonis' (Lebanon Township, N.J.) base hit up the middle for the Spiders only lead of the day.
Richmond had runners on base in five different frames and twice had runners on first and second, but they were stranded.
Richmond pitchers had a tough day on the mound. Starter Eli Larson (Mill Valley, Calif.) allowed five runs, two earned, on two hits, three walks, two UR errors and one hit batter. He collected three strikeouts and had three wild pitches in a four-inning outing.
Reliever Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) faced five batters and only registered one out, allowing two runs on two walks, one hit and one hit batter. Jesse Heikkinen (Holt, Mich.) got a double play to end the top of the fifth and threw a scoreless sixth inning, including a strikeout. He was lifted with one out in the seventh, getting tagged for three runs, two earned, on one hit and an error.
Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) went 1.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, a walk, one UR error and two strikeouts. Jake Michel (Baltimore, Md.) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while Brian Reinke (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) tallied the final two outs of the game, including a strikeout.
