05/10/2022 | Baseball
TOWSON, Md. – The University of Richmond baseball team plated three runs to cut Towson's lead in half in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short, as the Spiders fell 8-4 to the Tigers Tuesday at Schuerholz Park.
Richmond moves to 23-21 on the season, while Towson goes to 11-36 on the year. The Spiders close the book on the non-conference schedule with a 15-11 record.
The Spiders next head on the road to take on the Dayton Flyers, beginning Friday, May 13 with first pitch set for 7 p.m. at Day Air Ballpark. Saturday's 1 p.m. contest and Sunday's noon start will played at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
The Tigers took a quick 4-0 lead in the first, tagging Spider starter Rob Ready (Cape May, N.J.) with a grand slam, on two hits, two walks and two strike outs in an inning of work.
Towson added single runs in the third and fourth and two more runs in the fifth, pushing their lead out to 8-0. Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) went three plus innings on the mound, allowing the Tigers four other runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
Richmond threatened with runners on in the first and second but didn't break up the shutout until the seventh. With two outs, D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) and Shane Gipson (Chicago, Ill.) drew back-to-back walks. Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) laced a hit through the left side to score Pacheco for the Spiders first run of the game.
Gipson sparked the rally, drawing a lead-off walk, in the ninth. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) followed with a single to put two on for Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.). Toso collected a double to left to score Gipson. Mathes and Toso then scored on a Towson fielding error.
Spider reliever Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) tossed two scoreless innings with two walks and a strikeout. Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y) struck out both batters he faced in his first appearance since February while Antonio Balducci (Mechanicsville, Va.) retired both batters he faced as well. Harrison Clifton (Henrico, Va.) allowed one hit but battled to get out of the jam with a strikeout.
