Spiders Rally Falls Short Against VCU in A-10 Tournament Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team rallied in the top of the ninth to get within one run with the tying run on base, but fell short as the Spiders dropped 4-3 decision to VCU Tuesday in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
Richmond falls to 26-25 on the year as VCU moves to 37-19. Richmond will face Rhode Island in the elimination side of the bracket at 7 PM Wednesday at Wilson Field and on ESPN+.
Spiders starter Brock Weirather (Polk City, Fla.) allowed all four of VCU runs, three earned, on eight hits, five walks and two UR errors while striking out four in 6.2 innings on the mound. VCU tallied two runs in the fifth and tacked on two more in the seventh.
The Spiders had eight runners reach, but only three advanced to second in the first eight innings of the game.
In the top of the ninth, Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) got the Spiders going with a lead-off walk. Jason Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) followed with a walk of his own before Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) singled to load the bases.
Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) broke up the shutout with an RBI single to left field. VCU erased Lass at second, trying to turn a double play over threw the play on D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) at first to allow Neff and Elbeery to score to get within one at 4-3 with two outs.
Eli Kimbell (New York, N.Y.) took over for Weirather, allowing one hit and walking two while striking out three in an inning of work. Winston Allen (Morristown, N.J.) got the final out in the eighth, a four-pitch fly out.
