Spider Baseball Falls to George Mason

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond dropped a 9-2 decision to George Mason Saturday in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Pitt Field. The rubber match of the series is set for a noon first pitch Sunday at Pitt Field and on ESPN-Plus.
The Spiders fall to 22-20 on the season and 7-10 in A-10 action, while the Patriots move to 18-27 on the year and 9-8 in league action.
After back-to-back innings retiring Mason in order, including three strikeouts, Richmond starter Jeremy Neff (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was tagged with two unearned runs in the third on two hits and a UR error.
Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) cut Mason's lead in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Mathes launched his team-leading eighth home run to right field.
With two outs in the sixth, Mathes drew a walk, stole second and knocked out Mason's starter. Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed with his second base hit to bring in Mathes to tie the game at 2-all.
Mason answered with two runs in the seventh off of Neff. Neff (2-5) tossed 6.2 innings for the Spiders, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits, six walks and two hit batters with seven strike outs in the loss.
The Patriots tagged two Spider relievers for five runs on four walks, two hits, and two UR errors in the eighth to take a 9-2 lead.
