05/08/2022 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team won their second-straight Atlantic 10 series Sunday with a 7-2 decision over George Mason at Pitt Field. Richmond improves to 23-20 on the year and 8-10 in league action while Mason falls to 18-29 on the season and 9-9 in conference action.
The Spiders head on the road for their last non-conference game Tuesday, taking on the Towson Tigers with first pitch set for 3 p.m. airing on FloSports.
George Mason got on the board first, tallying a run in the first on two walks and a base hit.
Richmond answered with a run in the second inning when Jared Sprague-Lott (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored on Jason Neff's (West Palm Beach, Fla.) single through the right side of the field.
The Patriots re-took the lead with a two-out double down the left field line in the third off of Spider starter Brenden Argomaniz (Claremont, Calif.). Argomaniz, in his first start of the season, allowed two runs on two hits, four walks and a hit batter with two strikeouts in five innings of work for his fourth win of the season.
Zach Lass (Mechanicsville, Va.) gave the Spiders a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run to left field.
Richmond pitcher Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) tossed one and a third innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits, a walk and a hit batter with one strikeout.
Two-way player Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) came in from center field to toss the final two and two-thirds innings. Mathes allowed one hit, one walk and got two big strikeouts in his first outing on the mound since April 3 at Davidson.
Richmond added four insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. D.J. Pacheco (Danvers, Mass.) led off with a base hit and was followed by an infield single from Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.). Mathes moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt before Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.) was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Johnny Hipsman (Chester, N.Y.) picked up Pacheco for the first Spider run of the inning with a ground out. Sprague-Lott drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases again before Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) tallied his own walk to force in Beal. Neff collected his third hit of the day and two more RBI to push the Spiders lead to five at 7-2.
