Manhasset, N.Y.— Richmond women's lacrosse incoming freshman Alexis Morton has been named the Newsday Long Island Girl's High School Player of the Year.
Already recognized as an elite-level talent around the lacrosse Mecca that is Long Island, the senior attack came alive in the postseason to help Manhasset win the Class C girl's state championship and earn her the Player of the Year title. Manhasset is the same high school where Richmond assistant coach Lindsey Ronbeck attended and played before she went on to rewrite the NCAA record book, ranking in the all-time top-25 in career goals, single-season goals and single-season goals per game while at Florida.
Morton tallied 26 goals and 17 assists over six playoff games, with nearly half (43 of 102) points on the year coming after the regular season conclusion. In total, the Richmond commit found the back of the cage 58 times and added 44 helpers during her senior campaign. She averaged 5.4 points per game during the regular season, with that number jumping to a whopping 7.2 during her team's state title-winning run.
When Manhasset head coach Meghan Clarke, who served as an assistant during Ronbeck's tenure, was asked if she had ever seen a player rise to the occasion like Morton did in the playoffs, she responded, "to tell you the truth, I have not. I think she is the type of player that peaked at the right time and she knew when she needed to put the team on her back and lead them."
Clarke credits Morton's work ethic for the team's success, saying Morton was on the field the day after losing last year's state final and was even out practicing the day after this year's championship victory.
"Alexis is a high-energy person and player. We are so excited that she's a Spider and can't wait for her to settle in this fall with the team, said Richmond head coach Anne Harrington.
Morton, along with the rest of the Spiders' incoming class, will transition their talents to the college game once they arrive on campus this fall.
