Spider Hockey Dominates Davidson in A-10 Opener, 4-1

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team kicked open the door of Atlantic 10 Conference action Sunday, collecting a 4-1 victory over Davidson at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond, 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in league action, heads to the Midwest this weekend for the first of two straight road weekends. Richmond will take on A-10 foe Saint Louis Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. CT, before taking on reigning NCAA National Champion and No. 1 Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 25 at noon CT/1 p.m. ET.
The Spiders took five shots, with three on frame, in the first quarter, but the squads ended the first fifteen minutes at a scoreless tie.
Junior Stevie Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) broke up the tie with her second goal of the season in the 21st minute of action in the second quarter. Senior Tess Keppel (Baltimore, Md.) intercepted a pass and worked the ball up the field into the Spiders attacking third before zipping a pass to Drum in the circle. Drum got past her only Davidson defender for the clear shot past the Wildcat keeper stick side.
Richmond went up 2-0 in the third quarter off of junior Madi Hyatt's (Fredericksburg, Va.) third goal of the season. In the 42nd minute of the game, Hyatt tapped the ball past Davidson's goalkeeper taking advantage of junior Kaitlyn Csensits' (Emmaus, Pa.) pass out of a scramble in front of the goal.
Davidson broke up the shutout after converting one of four penalty corners in the game in the 45th minute of action.
Senior Regan McCrossan (Waxhaw, N.C.) put the Spider offense on her back in the fourth quarter, scoring both goals of the frame. In her first goal, she snuck past the Davidson defense to tap in a pass from Hyatt two minutes into the final period.
McCrossan put the hammer down at the with two minutes left in the game, hitting home a low shot past the Davidson goalie for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Spider defense only allowed six total shots with two on goal to the Wildcats, while firing off 18 of their own with 11 on frame. Davidson tallied one more corner than Richmond, 4-3.
