STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The two most-inexperienced members of the Richmond golf team sparked the Spiders on the final day of the Nittany Lion Invitational at Penn State's Blue Course Sunday. Hannah Lydic carded a 4-under 68, tied for the third-lowest round in program history, and fellow first-year Spider Olivia Wilkie shot a season-best 75 (+3).
Lydic's 68 moved her from ninth to second on the individual leaderboard as she finished the event at 3-under par (213) and earned runner-up honors in the field of 93. Her score was the second-best tournament score in Richmond history, trailing only the 205 (-11) she shot en route to winning last week's William & Mary Fall Invitational at Kingsmill Resort.Â
"I was able to get into the same rhythm i was in at Kingsmill," said Lydic of her play on Sunday. "Patience was the main key to all of our rounds today to be honest. The course was much harder than our first tournament so Coach Calle helped all of us keep level heads throughout the round which helped tremendously."
Lydic is the first Spider ever with a win and runner-up finish in her first two collegiate events.Â
Richmond finished the event with a team score of 894 (+30), fifth in the 16-team field. "I'm really proud of how the team finished," said Barlow of the Spiders, whose 14-over total over the final 36 holes was bested by only tournament champion Penn State. Barlow also said she was "super proud" of how the team's freshmen played Sunday, adding "I'm so excited to see them continue to grow and just get better from here."
Junior Rory Weinfurther tied for 11th at 220 (+4) and collected the third-most pars (38) of any golfer in the field. Weinfurther has now finished in the top 20 in 10 of her 11 full-field events over the last two seasons.Â
Junior Lauren Jones finished at 234 (+18) to tie for 68th, two shots in front of senior Vicky Zhu, who tied for 75th at 236 (+20).Â
Wilkie shot 239 (+23) and tied for 81st.
The Spiders will return to the course next week at Furman's The Lady Paladin in Greenville, S.C. from September 23-25.Â
