Spider Hockey Falls at No. 1 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fell to No. 1 Northwestern 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Richmond, 5-4 on the season and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 action, will jump back into league play Friday, Sept. 30, heading to Philadelphia to take on No. 12 Saint Joseph's (6-3, 2-0) for a 3 p.m. contest at Ellen Ryan Field on ESPN-Plus.
The Spiders started off strong, holding the Wildcats off the board until the fourth corner in the first quarter in the 13th minute of action. Freshman Lainey Nichols (Powhatan, Va.) fired off two shots, with one on goal, for Richmond but the Spiders were unable to capitalize.
Richmond got off two more shots, both by Lainey Nichols, and collected a corner in the second period. Northwestern (9-1, 0-1 BigTen) added two more goals in the quarter, tallying one off a corner in the 20th minute of action, and the other off an intercepted pass in the 29th minute of the game.
Spider goalie Erika Latta (Midlothian, Va.) collected five of her season-high 11 saves in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Richmond fired off three shots to open the frame, two by sophomore Stevie Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) and one by senior Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) but both were gobbled up by Northwestern. Richmond picked up back-to-back corners in the 37th minute of action, but Northwestern answered with a transition goal to push their lead to 4-0.
Frank tallied the Spiders only shot in the fourth quarter, as the squad held the Wildcats without a corner in the second half. Northwestern added a fifth goal in the 56th minute.
