Richmond Drops Season Opener at No. 20 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Richmond Baseball team fell 12-3 to No. 20 Alabama Friday evening on the opening day of the 2023 season. The Spiders and Crimson Tide return to Sewell-Thomas Stadium for the second game of the series Saturday with first pitch set to 3 PM Eastern on SEC Network Plus.
Spiders got on the board first in the top of the second. Zach Lass connected a walk and a wild pitch before scoring from second on a throwing error from the Tide's third baseman to take the early lead.
Mikey Kluska picked up the Spiders first hit of the game with a lead-off double in the third, but was stranded. In the fifth, he drew a walk but was stranded. Kluska collected his first home run of the season with a solo shot to left center in the seventh to cut into the Tide's lead, 11-2.
Jason Neff led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle of the infield, but was erased on a fielder's choice at second.
In the top of the ninth, Jared Sprague-Lott hit a 397-foot solo home run to left field for the Spiders third run of the game.
Richmond starter Brock Weirather (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over three innings of work. He also struck out three and walked two.
Vincent Corso tossed two innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits. Corso also struck out two, walked one and hit two batters.
Esteban Rodriguez tossed two shutout innings for the Spiders. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out three and walked one over three total innings of work.
