LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of Richmond Baseball team dropped a 10-2 decision to the VMI Keydets Wednesday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Richmond, now 2-6 on the season, return to Pitt Field to host the Central Virginia Challenge this weekend. The Spiders will take on Fairfield Friday, Canisius Saturday and West Virginia Sunday, all on ESPN+.
The Spiders fell behind quickly to the Keydets, spotting the home squad a 6-0 lead after the first inning. VMI got to UR's rookie starter Chase Topolski, who allowed six runs on five hits, one walk and a strikeout in an inning of work in the loss.
Richmond got a run back in the second when Jake Elbeery scored on Chase Conklin's sacrifice fly to center field. Elbeery led off the inning with a base hit, while Jason Neff doubled and Johnny Hipsman drew a walk.
Jimmy Starnes took over in the mound, tossing two innings and allowing three runs on one hit, two walks and three hit batters.
In the third, Alden Mathes hit a solo home run to center field for the Spiders second run of the game.
Spider reliever Kyle Subers tossed a scoreless fourth inning, collecting three strikeouts. Dane Armson followed with his own scoreless inning in the fifth, getting two strikeouts. He came back out for the sixth and picked up a third strikeout before allowing the Keydets 10th run of the game.
Richmond loaded the bases in the seventh but left them all stranded. Neff led off with a single to center and was followed by the first of two doubles by Hipsman, both collecting their second hit of the day. Jared Sprague-Lott drew a walk to load the bases.
Sammy Senders worked around two walks to strikeout the final two batters he faced in the seventh to keep the Keydets off the board.
Cole Hentchel allowed two hits but struck out three in his first outing of the season in the eighth.
