Rider Hands Spider Baseball Extra Innings Loss

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Baseball team fell to the Rider Broncs 9-6 in the 10th inning Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. The Spiders fall to 6-8 on the year, while the Broncs move to 10-4.
After four scoreless innings of action, Rider broke through in the fifth to score three runs on Richmond starter Brock Weirather. The Broncs hit Weirather up for two more runs in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. Weirather finished the day after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with a season-high seven strikeouts for his second-straight six inning outing for the Spiders.
Richmond answered in the bottom of the sixth, cutting Rider's lead to 5-3. After a lead-off single, Christian Beal scored on Johnny Hipsman's sacrifice fly to put the Spiders on the board for Hipsman's sixth-straight game with an RBI. Jared Sprague-Lott launched his third two-run home run of the series to left field, scoring Jason Neff, who reached with a double. Hipsman extended his hit streak to eight games with a hit in the fourth.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mikey Kluska drew a walk and stole second before Beal drew a walk of his own to force a Rider pitching change. Then Alden Mathes hit 393-foot three-run home run to right field to give the Spiders a 6-5 lead.
Dane Armson worked around a walk to throw a scoreless seventh. In the eighth, he gave up a solo home run allow the Broncs to tie the game at 6-all, getting two strikeouts in the inning. Armson faced three batters in the ninth, getting one out before Harrison Clifton got the final two outs, including a strike out.
The Spiders had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but the Broncs got out of the jam to force extra innings.
Richmond got two quick outs in the top of the tenth before the Rider bats woke up, scoring three runs on two hits, two Spider errors and a walk. The Spiders got a runner on in the bottom of the tenth but were unable to extend the game.
