Spider Baseball Splits Doubleheader with St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y. – Richmond Baseball took game two of the squad's doubleheader Friday against St. John's, 3-2, after dropping the first game 8-5, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The series finale will take place Sunday, March 26, with a noon first pitch.
Richmond, now 11-12 on the season, took an early lead on the Red Storm in the first game. Christian Beal picked up Jordan Jaffe with a base hit to left to tally the Spiders first run in the second. After Jaffe led off the fourth with a double, he scored on Jared Sprague-Lott's sacrifice fly to center, putting the Spiders up 2-0.
St. John's tied it in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits off of Richmond starter Brock Weirather. Weirather scattered five runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Richmond answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-2. Jason Neff doubled in Mathes for the first run of the inning. Johnny Hipsman picked up Neff before scoring on Jaffe's second double of the game.
Harrison Clifton was tagged with the loss after two runs scored on a come backer that hit him in the eighth. Jimmy Starnes got the final two outs for the Spiders, allowing an inherited runner score.
In the second game, the Red Storm scored first off a wild pitch in the second. Richmond answered in the top of the third when Zach Lass scored on Mikey Kluska's double to left.
The Johnnies regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a ground out, 2-1.
Sprague-Lott launched his fifth home run of the season to left field to tie the game at 2 all in the fifth inning. Hipsman doubled in the sixth inning to score Neff from first base for the game winning run.
On the mound for Richmond, Brenden Argomaniz picked up his second win of the season. He scattered two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Esteban Rodriguez tallied his first save of the season, allowing only two hits and a walk while fanning a season-high eight batters in four innings of relief.
