Spider Baseball Drops Midweek to No. 7 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Richmond Baseball team fell 18-0 in seven innings to No. 7 University of Virginia Tuesday at Disharoon Park.
Richmond, now 14-19 on the season, will return to Atlantic 10 Conference action this weekend as the squad heads to Amherst, Mass., to take on UMass. First pitch in the first game of the series is set for 3 PM Friday, April 14 on ESPN+.
The Spiders had runners on in the first three innings but were unable to push them home. Johnny Hipsman drew a walk in the first and got a base hit in the third.
The Spiders best opportunity to score early in the game was in the second. Jordan Jaffe led off with a double and Andrew Papantonis drew a walk with one out. Jaffe tried to score from second as UVA botched turning a double play, but the first baseman recovered and threw him out at home.
In his first collegiate start, Brian Reinke allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits, two walks, one hit batter and one strikeout.
With two outs in the Seventh, Christian Beal singled and Papantonis followed with a base hit of his own, but the rally stopped there.
Matt Anderson tossed two scoreless frames, working around two hits and collected a strikeout to keep the Cavaliers close.
With one run in on a solo home run, Will Gersky collected his first strikeout of the year for the second out of the fifth. UVA tagged Gersky for six more runs on four more hits, a walk and a hit batter before Jake Michel took over. Michel got the final out of the fifth after allowing a run on two hits, a hit batter, and a wild pitch.
UVA tacked on seven runs in the sixth inning, pushing their lead out to 18-0. Jimmy Starnes and Chase Topolski took the mound in the sixth, allowing seven runs, six earned, on two hits, two walks and three hit batters.
