Spider Baseball Takes Series Opener at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Richmond Baseball defeated Massachusetts 6-2 Friday at Earl Lorden Field to move to 4-3 in Atlantic 10 play. With the win the Spiders hold a 15-19 on the season.
The Spiders will take on the Minutemen for game two of the conference series Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
UMass got on the board first, scoring on a ground out to short in the second inning.
Richmond responded in the top of the third. Johnny Hipsman extended his hit streak to seven games with a double to left. Hipsman took third on a fly ball before scoring on Jordan Jaffe's base hit to right.
The Spiders took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning when Alden Mathes scored on Jake Elbeery's sacrifice fly. UR tacked on a run in the sixth inning, as Jared Sprague-Lott scored on Jason Neff's sacrifice fly in foul territory.
UMass got within one run in the sixth off of Richmond starter Brock Weirather. Weirather scattered seven hits, two runs, two hit batters, and three strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Elbeery and pinch hitter Chase Conklin had back-to-back singles in the seventh. Kluska's base hit found a hole on the right side to scored Elbeery from second, putting the Spiders up 4-2.
Jaffe launched a two-run home run for his fourth home run of the season in the top of the eighth, giving UR a commanding 6-2 lead.
Harrison Clifton took over in the eighth, working around a walk to keep the Minutemen off the board. Mathes pitched the ninth, striking out the first two batters he faced before getting a ground out to seal the victory.
