Spider Baseball Falls to UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Richmond Baseball jumped out to an early lead on UMass Saturday, but couldn't hold the lead, falling to the Minutemen 9-5 at Earl Lorden Field.
The Spiders, now 15-20 on the season and 4-4 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, will go for the rubber game against the Minutemen Sunday with first pitch set for noon on ESPN+.
Christian Beal put the Spiders on the board in the top of the second, launching a three-run home run to left center for his first four-bag blast of the season. Beal picked up Alden Mathes who led off the inning with a walk and Jordan Jaffe who doubled to left.
Jared Sprague-Lott put the Spiders up 4-0 in the third with his team-leading eighth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field.
UMass answered with two runs on the bottom of the third, cutting the Spiders lead in half with a two-run home run.
Jaffe made it a three-run lead, 5-2, in the top of the third with a solo shot to left for his fourth home run of the season.
The Minutemen jumped on Richmond starter Esteban Rodriguez in the fourth, roughing him up for four runs on five hits. Rodriguez, now 2-1 on the season, allowed seven runs on 10 hits, one hit batter and a walk with four strikeouts over four and two-thirds of an inning of work.
Richmond had two runners on in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings but they were all stranded.
UMass tacked on two runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a walk, double and error plus a wild pitch to take a 9-5 lead.
Brenden Argomaniz tossed three and a third inning of relief, scattering four hits, two unearned runs and a walk with four strikeouts.
