RICHMOND, Va. – After a 22-hour delay, the Richmond Baseball team officially dropped game two of the Atlantic 10 series to Fordham, 12-9 Sunday morning. The Spiders bounced back to capture a 7-4 win Sunday afternoon for the squad's third-straight league series victory this season.
Due to Spring semester finals week at the University of Richmond, the Spiders are back in action in league play heading to Fairfax, Va., to face the George Mason Patriots. First pitch Friday, April 28 is set for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
Richmond (18-22, 7-5 A-10) starter Jeremy Neff collected his second victory on the season after tossing a season-high eight innings. He matched a career-high 10 strikeouts, while limiting the high-powered Rams offense to just four runs on seven hits and one walk. Alden Mathes picked up his third save on the season, working around one hit while keeping Fordham (16-24, 4-8 A-10) off the board in the ninth.
The Spiders did all their scoring in just two innings, despite having chances later in the game and leaving 14 runners on base.
In the second, Alden Mathes and Jason Neff started the frame with back-to-back base hits. After advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Christian Beal, Mathes scored on Jake Elbeery's base hit to short to tie the game at 1-all. Jason Neff gave the Spiders a 2-1 lead when he scored on Mikey Kluska's sacrifice fly to deep center field. Elbeery tallied the Spiders third run of the game on Jared Sprague-Lott's infield hit for his sixth-straight game with a base hit.
Mathes reached in the third inning after getting hit, then advanced to second on a balk before scoring on Jason Neff sharp line drive down the left field line to give the Spiders a 4-2 lead. Beal and Elbeery drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Zach Lass and Kluska kept the line moving and the Spiders scoring with back-to-back base hits to leftfield, putting the Spiders up 6-2. Elbeery tallied UR's fourth run of the frame on a fielder's choice ground ball to short hit by Sprague-Lott.
Jordan Jaffe extended his hit-streak to 10 games with a lead off hit in the fourth but was erased on the base paths on a fielder's choice. Johnny Hipsman tallied a two-out single in the fifth inning to collect his team-leading 13th-straight game with at least one hit.
Beal, not registering an at-bat until the eighth inning, extended his reached base streak to 23 games with a walk in the third. He also reached base with a walk in the fourth and hit by a pitch in the sixth. Hipsman is just two games off Beal's pace with 21-straight games reaching the base path.
