RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond Baseball was unable to hold a two-run lead in the ninth, falling to VCU 4-3 Sunday at The Diamond to drop the Atlantic 10 Conference series.
Richmond (22-26, 11-9) closes out the regular season at Pitt Field this week. First, UR will host Norfolk State Tuesday with first pitch set for 2 PM before hosting Davidson in the final A-10 series of the season.
UR scored in the first inning when Jared Sprague-Lott, after drawing a leadoff walk, scored on Jordan Jaffe's sacrifice fly. After doubling in the third, Jaffe then tallied the Spiders second run, scoring on Jake Elbeery's base hit.
VCU got on the board in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch after loading the bases with a double, walk and hit by pitch.
Zach Lass picked up Alden Mathes, who led off the eighth with a bunt base hit, with a hit to short left field to make it 3-1.
Spider starter Kyle Subers tossed seven innings, only allowing one run in the fifth on four hits, a walk and one hit batter with seven strikeouts, before handing it over to the bullpen.
Harrison Clifton walked one batter before Alden Mathes took to the mound, working around a walk before getting two fly outs and a ground out to keep the Rams off the board.
Richmond went down in order in the top of the ninth. VCU combined four hits and a walk to score three runs in the bottom of the frame for the victory.
