Late Rally Falls Short for Spider Baseball Against Bonnies

RICHMOND, Va. – Down one run in the bottom of the ninth, Johnny Hipsman legged out a one-out double, but the final out of the game was caught at the wall with St. Bonaventure capturing an 8-7 victory over Richmond Baseball Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field.

The Atlantic 10 Conference series finale between Richmond (20-24, 9-7 A-10) and St. Bonaventure (8-32, 5-11 A-10) is set for noon Sunday at Pitt Field on ESPN+.

Richmond struck first, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning. After legging out a lead-off double, Jared Sprague-Lott tallied the Spiders first run on a base hit to left by Jordan Jaffe. Alden Mathes then scored Jaffe from second before advancing on a fielding error. Mathes collected his team-leading 10^th stolen base of the season before trotting home on a throwing error to give the Spiders a 3-0 lead.

St. Bonaventure got on the board in the second, with a solo home run off of Spider starter Jeremy Neff to make it a 3-1 game.

Jaffe collected his team-leading 17^th double of the season, collecting team-leading 44^th RBI when Sprague-Lott scored from first in the third.

The Bonnies got to Neff in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits and three walks to take a 5-4 lead. Neff went four and a third innings, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.

Chase Conklin retook the lead for Richmond, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth, launching a two-run home run to right field for his first home run of the season.

UR added a run in the fifth to go up 7-5 when Jason Neff got a hit to right field to score Hipsman, who led off the frame with a base hit and a stolen base. With the hit, Hipsman extended his hit streak to 17-straight games and reached-base streak to 25 games.

Richmond reliever Esteban Rodriguez finished the fifth with two ground outs, then wiggled out of a bases loaded situation in the sixth with a strikeout and not allow a run. Bonnies got to him in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead on a three-run home run. Rodriguez took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
