10/14/2024 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond field hockey's Valen Luna Paratore has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league announced on Monday. This is the team's six honoree this season.
Luna Paratore put together a seven-point game in the Spiders 4-2 conference victory over Lock Haven (Oct. 11) with a hat trick and an assist on Avery Russell's goal.
After a scoreless opening period against Lock Haven, Luna Paratore converted the Spiders first penalty stroke of the season in the 21st minute of action. The Spiders defense made a stop then zipped the ball up the field and connected with Lainey Nichols on a fast break. Nichols found Luna Paratore for the score to make it 2-0 Spiders in the 28th minute of the half.
Nearly three minutes into the start of the second half, Luna Paratore drew the Lock Haven goalkeeper out and found Avery Russell for the goal to give the Spiders a 3-0 lead. Luna Paratore collected her first collegiate hat trick in the 48th minute after corralling her first shot attempt near the end line. She then fired it in on a tight angle as the goalkeeper was unable to recover from her first shot attempt.
Luna Paratore is tied with teammate Clara Larripa with 11 goals in 13 games this season, both of which are third in the A-10.
With two wins on the weekend, Richmond move to 10-3 on the season and 4-0 in A-10 action. The Spiders head to Philadelphia to face nationally ranked Saint Joseph's Friday at 3 p.m. at Ellen Ryan Field on ESPN-plus.
