No. 20 Men’s Lacrosse Outlasted By No. 6 Maryland In Double Overtime
02/03/2024 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond, Va. – The No. 20 University of Richmond men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 double overtime decision to No. 6 Maryland Saturday in front of a crowd of 2,407 in the season opener at Robins Stadium.
One-goal games are not rare in the all-time series between the Spiders and Terrapins. While Richmond has yet to get a win off Maryland in four meetings, Saturday's game came as the third decided by just one goal and the second to go to double overtime.
"The difference in these games is razor thin," said head coach Dan Chemotti.
Richmond (0-1) and Maryland (1-0) were nearly even on the final box score. Both teams recorded 36 shots (24 on cage for Richmond, 22 for Maryland), while the Terrapins held a narrow 27-26 advantage in ground balls and recorded 17 turnovers to Richmond's 16.
Richmond goals were scored by Lance Madonna, Aidan O'Neil and Dalton Young (assist) with two each, while Jeff Nugent, Henry Alpaugh (2 assists), Luke Grayum (assist), Charlie Packard and Gavin Creo each added one. Packard and Creo's goals came as the first in the freshmen's collegiate careers. Max Merklinger also recorded an assist.
Richmond and Maryland traded goals to begin the first quarter before the Spiders went on a three unanswered goal run followed by a five unanswered goal run from the Terrapins to make it a 7-5 game with 4:07 left to go in the opening half. The second half saw three ties at 8-8, 10-10 and 11-11. Maryland took a 10-8 lead with 2:32 left in the third quarter before Young and O'Neil added goals to make it 10-10 early in the fourth. Both teams scored again to make it an 11-11 game by 7:32 of the fourth quarter, a score that would stand for the following 12:37 of play until Maryland gained possession on the opening face off of the second overtime period and scored the game-deciding goal shortly after.
Richmond committed four penalties and the Terrapins were 2-for-4 on extra-man opportunities. Jack Pilling led the Spiders with five ground balls, and Grayum, Hunter Smith, Braden McClure, Jack Fabean, Tommy Stull and Jake Kapp each recorded a caused turnover. Richmond was a perfect 21-of-21 on clears to Maryland's 22-of-25, and face off specialist Jared Chenoy went 12-of-19 at the dot.
Sophomore goalie Connor Knight made his first career start in the contest, tallying 10 saves.
Richmond will play Robert Morris in a neutral site game next Saturday, Feb. 10 at Georegtown Prep in North Bethesda, Md.
