03/15/2024 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – DJ Pacheco had a six RBI day to spur Richmond baseball to an 8-4 victory Friday against Cornell at Pitt Field.
Richmond, now 8-9 on the season, will host Cornell for game two of the weekend series Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
After Phil Bernstein scored from second on a wild pitch in the first, Pacheco launched a 396-foot grand slam to center field in the bottom of the second to put the Spiders up 5-0.
Cornell got three runs off UR starter Kyle Roche in the third and one off Dane Armson in the seventh to get within a run, 5-4. Roche got the victory, scattering three unearned runs over six hits, a walk and three strikeouts in five innings. Armson tallied two hits, a walk and two strikeouts in an inning and two thirds.
Aidan O'Keefe and Jack Arcamone both reached with base hits to start the eighth. Chase Conklin put down a bunt past the mound and scores O'Keefe for the first insurance run of the frame. Pacheco then scores Arcamone and Conklin with a sharp base hit through the infield for his fifth and sixth RBI of the day and give UR an 8-4 lead.
Harrison Clifton bridged the UR pitching staff from Armson to Cole Hentschel, getting the final out in the seventh and first out in the eighth.
Hentschel picked up his second save of the season after striking out two in the ninth inning and getting out of a bases loaded situation. Hentchel tossed one and two-thirds of an inning, striking out four, allowed two hits and two walks.
