03/17/2024 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Jason Shockley hit a three-run home run to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning to help the Richmond baseball team capture an 8-4 victory Sunday at Pitt Field over Cornell.
Richmond, now 9-10 on the season, picked up the squad's third series victory of the season in the last four weekends.
It was Shockley's third home run of the season, and he is now tied with DJ Pacheco and Jake Topolski to pace the squad.
Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Phil Bernstein and RJ Rickabaugh hit RBI doubles.
Cornell tallied two runs in the fourth off Richmond starter Jackson Kraemer. Kraemer allowed two runs on two hits and four hit batters, didn't allow a walk, and struck out three in four innings of work.
The Big Red got another run in the sixth, off reliever Vincent Corso. Corso gave up an unearned run on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts in two innings of work.
Richmond tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh. Rickabaugh tallied his second RBI double of the day before Connor Larson forced in a run after drawing a bases loaded walk. Aidan O'Keefe then scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-3.
Spider relievers, Davis Wallon, Matt Anderson and Dane Armson combined to throw two scoreless frames, the seventh and eighth innings. Wallon retired the two batters he faced to start the seventh. Anderson worked around two hits to keep the Big Red off the board to finish the frame. Armson allowed a walk and a hit with a strike out in his inning of work. Harrison Clifton allowed one run in the ninth on three hits and picked up a strikeout.
