Spider Baseball Picks Up Midweek Victory Over Norfolk State
RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Baseball team batted around in the first and third innings, helping the squad to a 17-10 victory Tuesday afternoon over Norfolk State at Pitt Field.
Richmond, now 18-23 on the season, jumps back into Atlantic 10 Conference action this weekend. UR (7-5) heads out on the road to take on St. Bonaventure, starting on Friday at 3 p.m.
Norfolk State took a quick 3-0 lead after half of an inning. Richmond responded in the bottom of the first with four runs to take the lead. With the bases loaded, Jake Topolski collected two RBI with a double to left. RJ Rickabaugh tied the game with an RBI groundout before Jake Topolski scored on Aidan O'Keefe's single to left and give UR a 4-3 lead.
In the second inning, Jake Topolski launched a three-run home run off the batter's eye in centerfield, his seventh of the season to put the Spiders up 7-3.
Nick Lorenzo, after reaching base after getting hit in the first, doubled to lead off the third inning for the first of his two hits in the frame. Whitley was hit by the pitch and Jordan Jaffe drew a walk to load the bases. Jack Arcamone hit his first collegiate grand slam, his second home run of the season, to centerfield to put UR up 11-3.
Pacheco doubled before Topolski collected his third hit in his third at bat of the game. Pacheco scored on a wild pitch before Connor Larson picked up Topolski with a base hit to left, pushing the Spiders lead to ten, 13-3.
Richmond starter Chase Topolski shook off the tough first inning to toss three-straight scoreless innings. Topolski allowed three runs on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Matthew Anderson (2-1) picked up the win after two scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Whitley launched his team-leading eighth home run in the fifth, picking up Lorenzo who collected his third hit of the day in the at bat prior.
NSU collected three runs in the seventh off Ethan Sannes, who had already struck out two batters. Sannes gave up three hits and a walk in the frame before getting the final out with UR up 15-6.
Jackson Kraemer got two strikeouts in the eighth but allowed three runs on two hits and a walk. Dane Armson got the final out via strikeout after he allowed a run on a wild pitch. Cole Hentschel inherited a runner on in the ninth who scored on a one-out base hit. Hentschel allowed two hits and a walk, while collecting two strikeouts and picked off the run at first for the final out of the game.
