Spider Baseball Takes A-10 Series Opener Against St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, NY – The University of Richmond baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never let St. Bonaventure get close Friday as the Spiders collected a 9-4 victory in Atlantic 10 Conference action.
The second game of the series between Richmond (19-23, 8-5 A-10) and St. Bonaventure (14-22, 4-9 A-10) is set for a noon start Saturday.
UR jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Aaron Whitley got hit by the first pitch of the game then crossed the plate on DJ Pacheco's base hit to left. Phil Bernstein scored the second run on Jordan Jaffe's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Bonnies were able to scratch a run across in the third off UR starter Esteban Rodriguez, to cut the Spiders lead in half, 2-1. Rodriguez allowed just one unearned run over 4 and two thirds of an inning, on two hits, two walks, three hit batters and four strikeouts.
Richmond tacked on two more runs in the fifth. After leading off the inning with a walk, Whitley stole second and took third on a SBU throwing error. He then scored on Bernstein's base hit to centerfield to make it 3-1. Bernstein scored from second on Jordan Jaffe's base hit through the infield, extending the Spiders lead to 4-1.
In the sixth inning, Zach Lass scored on Whitley's sacrifice fly to deep center.
The Spider offense broke open the game in the seventh connecting four hits and two SBU errors to score four runs. After leading off with a base hit, Pacheco went first to third on a failed pick off attempt before scoring on Jack Arcamone's base hit to left. Jake Topolski doubled in Arcamone and Lass to make it 8-1. Topolski then scored from second on Connor Larson's base hit before Larson was called out at second trying to advance on the throw home.
Brian Reinke (2-5) got the win, allowing a run in the seventh, scattering three hits over three innings of work and striking out four.
After Reinke struck out the first two batters of the eighth, Dane Armson took over on the mound. He used just three pitches to get the fly out to end the inning. Armson allowed three straight hits to start the ninth before inducing a double play but two SBU runs scored, making it 9-4. Logan Ymker tossed three pitches to get the final out of the game for the Spider victory.
