Spider Baseball Drops First Game Against Fordham

BRONX, NY – The University of Richmond baseball team fell 5-2 to Fordham to open the Atlantic 10 Conference series at Houlihan Park Friday.
Richmond, now 12-7 on the year and 2-2 in league action, will take on Fordham for game two Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Fans at home can follow along via live stats.
Fordham scratched a run across in the first on a sacrifice fly. The Spiders answered with a run in the third to tie the game when Phil Bernstein doubled in Aaron Whitley from first.
Fordham added three insurance runs in the sixth inning to move ahead 4-1, connecting two hit by pitch, three singles and a sacrifice fly.
DJ Pacheco and Bernstein hit back-to-back singles to collect their second hit of the day to start the eighth. Nick Lorenzo laced a pinch-hit single to right center to score Bernstein and cut Fordham's lead in half at 4-2.
The Rams answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to ice the Spider offense.
UR starter Kyle Roche tossed six innings, allowing four runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and four hit by pitch. Logan Ymker took over in the seventh, allowing one run on two hits, a walk and two strikeouts over one and a third of an inning of work. Harrison Clifton made his 17th appearance out of the bull pen this season, using five pitches to get the final two outs of the eighth.
