Spider Baseball Takes Series Opener Over URI

KINGSTON, RI – The University of Richmond Baseball team scored first and was able to hold off the University of Rhode Island Rams to capture the Atlantic 10 Conference series opener 3-2 Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Saturday's contest between Richmond (22-27 on the season and 11-8 in league play) and Rhode Island (16-26 on the year and 8-11 in conference play) is set for a 1 p.m. start on ESPN+.
The Spiders scored in the first inning. Aaron Whitley hit a double to left on the first pitch of the game. Then scored on Phil Bernstein's double down the left field line.
UR went up 2-0 in the third as Bernstein scored on D.J. Pacheco's sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Richmond starter Esteban Rodriguez tossed three scoreless frames with six strikeouts before the Rams hit back-to-back solo homeruns in the fourth to tie the game.
The Spiders regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Whitley scored on Jordan Jaffe's base hit through the left side of the infield.
Rodriguez regrouped to keep the Rams off the board for another one and a third of an inning of work before handing the game over to Brian Reinke. Rodriguez finished his 5.1 inning outing with eight strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter.
Reinke tossed two and a third of scoreless innings with four strikeouts and scattering two hits. Cole Hentschel picked up his A-10 leading eighth save of the season, working around two walks and striking out one in an inning and a third of work.
